“In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” Matthew 3:1-2
John proclaimed the kingdom of God was near. This is the same message that Jesus also proclaimed. They both said that the kingdom of God was good news. The people followed them because they had a message they wanted to hear. The problem was this kingdom was not the kingdom that the Jewish people wanted to hear. The Jewish people wanted a king that would rule on earth, restore the Jewish nation and destroy the Romans. The kingdom most of the people hoped for did not happen. Was John and Jesus wrong about this kingdom that was near? No, this kingdom was near 2,000 years ago and it is just as close today as it was then.
Jesus tells us, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36) How can there be a kingdom and it not be of the world? Jesus told Nicodemus, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) The kingdom that John and Jesus were talking about is a spiritual kingdom. To understand this kingdom one must be renewed in the spirit and born again. This kingdom is a kingdom that will last for all eternity. It will never end and if you are part of this kingdom, you will live with Jesus forever.
Repent and turn from your sins and you can be part of this kingdom.
