“But now I said to them, “You know very well what trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire. Let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem and end this disgrace!” Nehemiah 2:17
Today we need more people like Nehemiah. Our nation and our world is broken. Just like the walls of Jerusalem were broken. Our gates have been destroyed and we lay in ruin, but it is not hopeless. Just as rebuilding the walls, it will take determination and a faith in God to change our nation. Nehemiah soon discovered that his biggest problem was not the enemy on the outside but the compromiser on the inside, a problem that we face today in our churches.
Nehemiah looked around to see what the project was going to take and what needed to be done. He counted the cost before starting the project. He knew that the project was going to cost him dearly, but he was willing to step out and obey God. He was willing to step out of his comfort zone and do a great thing for God. Today we like our comfort zone. We know the work that needs to be done but we just don’t want to trust God enough to even start the work, much less to move out of our comfort zone to do the work.
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” (Jeremiah 2:13) Are you willing to help repair the broken cistern? If so, step out of your comfort zone and become a Nehemiah.
