“As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. He said to him, ‘Follow Me’ so he arose and followed Him.” (Mark 2:14)
The response of the disciples is an act of obedience, not a confession of faith in Jesus Christ. It is Jesus who calls and because it is Jesus, Levi follows at once.
This is a testimony to the absolute, direct authority of Jesus Christ.
Because Jesus is the Christ, He has the authority to call and to demand obedience to His word.
Jesus summons men to follow Him not as a teacher, but as the Christ, the Son of the living God.
There is no other road to discipleship, but the road of obedience to the call of Jesus Christ.
Levi leaves all that he has, but not because he thinks that he might be doing something worthwhile, but simply for the sake of the call. This act of Levi has no value in itself. It is just being obedient to the call of Jesus.
Levi left his old life behind and with complete surrender, he left a life of security and went into a life of insecurity. He left a life in the finite, into a realm of infinite possibilities.
He left to follow Jesus only because it was Jesus. He received no promises, only to obey Jesus and His call.
Over thirty years ago I answered a call from Jesus and it has been the greatest adventure of my life. I answered the call out of obedience to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Is Jesus calling you? Answer the call and in it you will receive more than you ever give up.
